How the connection process works

  1. A connection request is sent from the client to the host

  2. The inetd daemon listens on all ports

  3. The number of the port the request is made on is looked up in /etc/services

  4. /etc/services gives the service name associated with the port number

  5. This service name is looked up in inetd.conf. This entry then gives instructions on what service to run
