CAREER SUMMARY
Barclays Capital Group, Tower Hill, London EC3 (contract) October 1999-present
System Administrator: I am currently working on a disaster recovery/contingency project. This involves either moving existing servers to the DR site or setting up new servers at the DR site and migrating applications on to the new servers. These have been HP, Sun and DEC servers. The HP servers have been set up as Service Guard clusters using StorageTek disk arrays to minimise single points of failure. I have also been working on a project to migrate applications from Digital Unix on to Solaris platform and have been providing support for the Digital Unix servers in the interim.
Roche Products, Welwyn Garden City, Herts. (contract) February 1999-August 1999
System Administrator: I was working on a project to set up an HP-UX test environment to test upgrade paths for Unix software in preparation for the millennium. Once the upgrade paths were proven the live servers were upgraded. Setting up the test environment involved creating a Service Guard cluster consisting of a database server and a system management server. The software that I had to upgrade included Network Node Manager, ITO, OmniBack and Maestro. Once the applications had been successfully upgraded in test, this was the repeated in the live environment. . In some cases HPUX had to be upgraded first. I have also been patching the live servers up to ensure stability.
Barclays Capital Group, Tower Hill, London EC3 (contract) February 1998-February 1999
System Administrator: I worked in Barclays Capital’s Year 2000 laboratory and was responsible for the Unix servers. The site had a mix of HP, Sun and Digital boxes. I had to build and configure the Unix servers and workstations prior to each applications testing and provide ongoing support. Approximately 300 applications had to be tested over a 9 month period so efficiency of testing was vital. During the initial stages I was responsible for commissioning the Unix servers. I then had to ensure that the Unix builds were fast, compliant and conformed to standards. Streamlining the process was an ongoing task and I achieved this using vendor provided Unix utilities and scripting.
Comdisco Disaster Recovery Services, Isleworth, Middx. (contract) April 1997-February 1998
Recovery Analyst: This role entailed assisting customers with disaster recovery planning and testing. This ranged from setting up and configuring the hardware prior to tests to consultancy, developing and proving recovery plans. The work required a good understanding of UNIX systems, hardware and recovery tools. I have was mainly working on large HP servers and Sun platforms but also worked on RS6000, SP2 and Digital Alphas.
Cable Internet, Genesis Business Park, Woking, Surrey.(contract
) December 1996-April 1997System Administrator: I worked for an Internet service provider maintaining and developing the internet services on HP, Sun and Silicon Graphics servers. As a rapidly expanding site, it was necessary to set up and configure new servers as well as doing general administration for the internet services. This included setting up and registering domains under DNS, maintaining the firewall database, setting up email accounts and maintaining the news server and usenet facilities.
J.Sainsbury PLC, Stamford Street, London. SE1 9LL August 1988-December 1996

My tasks included building operating systems, installing and customising software, applying patches, providing technical consultancy and support to application teams and second line support for all UNIX boxes. I carried out a wide variety of system administration tasks such as changing kernel parameters, disk management using LVM,setting up new accounts, backups, etc and was responsible for job scheduling and printing software on the servers. I frequently wrote shell scripts for housekeeping, monitoring and automation purposes. My work involved some project management and I ran projects to improve security, standarise the build of boxes and trailing new software packages. I also did some work with Data General's DG/UX.
